Zoom! Teeth Whitening

Zoom! is an in-office teeth whitening procedure that delivers immediate results. It is important to tell our patients that results are not typical and vary on a case by case basis. Some stain is more difficult to remove, such as tetracycline staining, which causes teeth to have a grayish tint. In this case, we may recommend bleaching on a frequent basis.

It is very important to have the patient read our consent form before the procedure starts. After the patient reads and signs the consent form, it is important to explain the procedure and answer all questions that the patient has. We like to discuss sensitivity with patients and explain to them what may occur during the procedure. We also recommend taking Advil prior to the procedure to minimize the sensitivity.

The Zoom! Procedure

During the Zoom! procedure, the patient’s mouth is kept open with a mouth retractor. This enables us to have proper access to isolate all of the tissue in the mouth so it does not get exposed to the Zoom! light or the Zoom! bleach. We then place 2 lip blankets around the mouth to avoid any lip/chin exposure. We then isolate all tissue that is exposed with gauze and a liquid dam that is light cured onto the exposed tissue.

After isolation is thoroughly checked and complete, we apply bleach evenly on each tooth that we can see with a benda brush – usually from first molar to first molar, but could be further back depending on how many teeth we can see.

The Zoom! lamp is then turned on and placed over the mouth for 15 minutes.

After the first 15 minutes is complete, we remove the lamp and suction the bleach off of the teeth. We then apply new bleach and place the patient back under the Zoom! lamp for the second round of 15 minutes. We will then repeat those steps 2 times to get the patient’s maximum results. (Only 3 sessions under the Zoom Lamp are required, but we like to do 4 sessions so we know that we were able to get the maximum results for the patient while they were in the office.)

Post-Procedure

After the whitening procedure is complete, it is important to let patients know that if they eat or drink anything staining for the next 24 – 48 hours, they need to brush right after. The reason being, the pores become open during bleaching and can cause teeth to be more susceptible to stain.

We give a fluoride treatment also to aid in re-hydrating the teeth and to aid in helping with the sensitivity. We then take an after photo for comparison.
